Watch Kendrick Lamar Give A Stirring, Heartfelt Speech During NYC Gig

If you’ve listened to at least one Kendrick Lamar song in your lifetime, you’ll know that he’s not one to mince his words and he further proved that at a New York gig, taking the chance to reflect on the year he’s had with an honest speech.

To Pimp A Butterfly – people have said a lot about this album,” he said.

“They’ve said album of the year and album of the generation and all that shit – that’s cool. But on some real shit making this motherfucking album was therapy, not only for you but for me.”

He goes onto explain that within six months of him dropping his major label debut good kid, m.A.A.d city people were telling him he was great but it was hard for him to believe it because of where he came from.

“This album has soared right to the top, with no motherfucking commercial success,” he further said about his most recent record that dropped with very little notice back in March and went to the top of the charts in the US, the UK and here in Australia.

“God allowed it to be top tier, without a constant radio single or shit. So that proves to you right there that music isn’t something [that] you can market all the time.”

Somewhat disturbingly though he also revealed that this tour could be the last time he plays To Pimp A Butterfly live.

“This may be the first and last time that I perform To Pimp A Butterfly – [in] eight to 10 cities,” Lamar told the crowd.

While he doesn’t really explain the statement, it seems that he’s talking about playing it in the US which means he’ll hopefully still be playing it live by the time he lands here in March for Bluesfest and a few headline shows.

As end of year lists start popping up in the next few months it’s likely that you’ll be seeing To Pimp A Butterfly on more than just a few critic lists.
