Hear Chris Cornell Dedicate Moving Melbourne Performance Of ‘Say Hello 2 Heaven’ To Scott Weiland

Legendary vocalist Chris Cornell is currently in the midst of an acoustic tour across Australia, and was in Melbourne when he heard the shocking news of Scott Weiland‘s death.

The pair’s career trajectories have been similar – both become rock icons in the ’90s, fronting two of the most iconic bands of the era (Stone Temple Pilots/Soundgarden) before going on to achieve even more success fronting supergroups in the naughties (Velvet Revolver/Audioslave).

So, naturally, the news of Weiland’s death affected Cornell on a deeply personal level, inspiring him to dedicate an acoustic performance of Temple Of The Dog’s moving ballad Say Hello 2 Heaven to his fallen brother during his show at The Palais Theatre on the night that the news broke.

Music Feeds reviewer Brenton Harris was there and called the performance “powerful”, adding that – despite the heartbreaking news about Weiland – it made “seeing Cornell in such great shape all the more life affirming”.

It follows written tributes from many of Weiland’s other 90’s rock contemporaries, including his former Stone Temple Pilots bandmates and Smashing Pumpkins frontman, Billy Corgan.

Cornell originally penned Say Hello 2 Heaven as a tribute to Mother Love Bone frontman Andrew Wood, who died of a heroin overdose in 1990. Hear him perform it in 2015 for Scott Weiland, below.

Meanwhile, Weiland’s ex-wife has come out with a heartbreaking call not to glorify the tragedy of her former husband’s death.

But we can still celebrate his life. Read our own tribute to Scott Weiland’s incredible musical legacy right here.
