17 Year Old Charged Over Alleged False Threat That Led To The Evacuation of The Sydney Opera House

A 17 year old boy has been charged over allegedly making an online threat that led to the Sydney Opera House precinct and Manly ferry wharf being evacuated and searched last week. No details have been released regarding the boy’s identity or the nature of the threat.

Almost leading to the cancellation of the Opera House’s Sydney Festival program for the night, the threat was received by NSW Police at 10:50am on Thursday via social media.

The Sydney Opera House forecourt was then evacuated by 2pm, police searching the premises as a precautionary measure and erecting a metal barrier to stop pedestrian traffic. Meanwhile the 1.20pm ferry from Manly to the city was also cancelled, after officers were told those responsible for the threats may have been on ferry.

Searches at both locations proved fruitless however, with Police turning up nothing of note.

Eventually arresting the 17 year old boy on Monday at City of Sydney police station, he was charged with “false representation resulting in a police investigation.”

He is due to face court on February 23.
