The Rubens Win Triple J’s Hottest 100 Of 2015

UPDATE 27/01/16: Watch a video of The Rubens reacting to their triple j Hottest 100 win.

UPDATE 27/01/16: The Rubens have responded to critics of yesterday’s “safe” Hottest 100 results.

Triple j‘s Hottest 100 has wrapped up for another year, and New South Wales band The Rubens have claimed top spot on the countdown with their song Hoops.

Scoring the most of more than two million votes which were submitted by listeners from 172 countries this year, The Rubens scored only one spot on this year’s countdown, and beat out Kendrick Lamar’s King Kunta and Major Lazer & DJ Snake’s Lean On, which placed second and third respectively.

Speaking with triple j‘s Matt Okine and Alex Dyson after Hoops took the number one spot, the band said, “This is insane, this is mental.”

Speaking about the song, triple j’s Content Director Ollie Wards says, “Dropping in July 2015, the song’s four to the floor beat and sing along lyrics make it a total earworm for triple j listeners. Despite it being a slower song for the band, ‘Hoops’ always gets the crowd moving at their awesome live shows.”

In total, 54 songs from Australian acts made the Hottest 100 of 2015, led by four from Melbourne singer-songwriter Courtney Barnett and another four from Kevin Parker and his pals in Tame Impala.

This year’s countdown didn’t quite reach the record for the most Aussie entries, which was set last year at an impressive 59 after breaking the previous record of 52 from 1999 and 2007. That said, this is the third consecutive year that an Aussie act has taken the number one spot.

Elsewhere on this year’s Hottest 100, Aussies Parkway Drive had two entries, as did SAFIA, Flight Facilities and RÜFÜS.

As for international acts, Florence + The Machine, The Wombats and Bring Me The Horizon all scored three gongs, while the likes of Jamie xx, CHVRCHES and A$AP Rockyall picked up two nods a piece.

This year’s countdown featured 37 songs with female vocals, including four which had both female and male vocals, as well as 30 songs from artists who have shared their music through triple j Unearthed.

Two covers from triple j‘s Like A Version segment also made the Hottest 100 this year: Tuka’s take on Angus & Julia Stone’s Big Jet Plane (#81) and Sticky Fingers’ version of DMA’s Delete (#84).

A total of 26 acts made their Hottest 100 debuts this year, including Aussie acts like Golden Features, Methyl Ethel and What So Not. Ngaiire also become the first Papua New Guinean artist to chart in the Hottest 100.
