Masters of the impossible pop video OK Go have released yet another reality (and this time gravity) defying video for their track Upside Down & Inside Out.
Shot in zero gravity in skies above Russia, the video features the four-piece, air hostesses/trained aerialist acrobats and a smorgasbord of toys, paints and disco balls flying through the air.
“It was nearly a decade ago that the world started buzzing about commercial space travel and exploration,” OK Go singer Damien Kulash, Jr. said. “When I heard about Virgin Galactic and Space X, it dawned on me that soon enough, people will be making art in space.”
OK Go trained at the Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center, run by Russia’s version of NASA, where they spent three weeks playing, testing, and filming for the video.
“Because we wanted the video to be a single, uninterrupted routine, we shot continuously over the course of eight consecutive weightless periods, which took about 45 minutes, total,” explains director Trish Sie. “We paused the action, and the music, during the non-weightless periods, and then cut out these sections and smoothed over each transition with a morph.”
According to the band, the video was designed in “27-second chunks”. “The longest stretch of zero gravity we can get is about 27 seconds, and then it takes five minutes to reset to do it again,” they explained. “After we filmed a scene, when gravity returned, we stayed as still as we could for the five minutes of the plane climbing, and then began the next scene as soon as we were weightless again.”
The track features on OK Go’s new album Hungry Ghosts.
