University Of Adelaide Music Institute To Be Named After Sia

The University of Adelaide has announced that it will name its new music institute after Adelaide-born musician, producer and writer Sia Furler.

The notoriously media-shy Sia did not attend the University, but that hasn’t stopped her from lending her name to the Conservatorium Of Music’s new ‘Sia Furler Institute for Contemporary Music and Media’.

The new institute will draw teaching expertise both from the Conservatorium itself as well as from the university’s Department of Media, and will teach courses in contemporary music performance, composition, film, digital media and sound engineering.

Conservatorium director Professor Graeme Koehne was quoted in the Adelaide Observer as saying: “As a performer and songwriter, and one whose creativity extends equally to video and digital media, Sia has become an inspiration to young artists the world over — and it’s that talent we aim to foster through our new institute.”.

Sia will be involved in an official announcement by the Conservatorium soon from her current location in Los Angeles, and has thanked the University for the honour. “I want to say thank you to the University of Adelaide,” she said. “It’s very exciting and humbling.”

It is unknown at this stage whether the musician has made any financial contribution towards the new institute.
