Sydney Has Its Own Eurovision-Style Song Contest With $3K In Prizes Up For Grabs

Calling all Sydney songwriters: you could pocket a cool $2 Large just for waxing lyrical about your city of origin and here’s how.

Newtown Neighbourhood Centre is getting its mad Eurovision on for the seventh year running, with the return of a local songwriting contest dubbed… wait for it… Sydneyvision.

And the best part (or worst, depending upon your POV) is you won’t need any sequinned spandex, wind machines, coordinated choreography or pyrotechnics to enter.

Unless you’re really, really into that.

The competition is inviting local tunemasons to pen an original ode to their beloved city, and submit a song and music video to be eligible for bagging the top prize of $2K cashish.

12 finalists will be selected for screening at the Grand Final at Dendy Opera Quays and will be in the running for over $3,000 in prizes, including a spot on the 2016 Newtown Festival lineup.

But there are a couple of provisos, a few quid pro quos: all Sydneyvision songs must contain the name of a Sydney suburb somewhere in the lyrics, and show something “iconic” in the music video.

“Sydney, the city of the Harbour Bridge and Opera House, is the city where everything is routinely described as iconic. Everything that is except the Sydneyvision Song Contest, however this year, that changes!” said Ken Saunders, Sydneyvision creator and Community Development Manager at Newtown Neighbourhood Centre.

And typical Newtown fashion, he’s defined “iconic” as: “anything that will make people stand up and say, ‘Well yes, I have seen that before…I think’.”

“So songwriters and video makers, get out your Che Guevara t-shirts, film your song while hula hooping, don your Ned Kelly helmets, display your Seattle grunge scene tattoos to the camera or, dare we suggest, your Zane-from- One-Direction haircut….sorry….perhaps that last one is ironic,” Ken said.

Entry is free and closes on August 1st. For all the info, head to sydneyvision.org

Now… what rhymes with “Dulwich Hill”?
