Foo Fighters Fan Launches Crowdfunding Campaign To ‘Buy’ Dave Grohl

Rock 108 radio host and Texas resident Frank Pain has launched a GoFundMe campaign for $35,000 so that he can “purchase Dave Grohl.”

Pain, who calls himself ‘The Painman,’ created the crowdfunding page on 3 May and raised $433 in the first day. That has now climbed to an unfortunately meagre $584 at the time of writing.

Pain said of his inspiration to buy the Foo Fighters frontman: “I’m his biggest fan and figured I can round up enough scratch to purchase him so we can hang out and high five and shit. Heck, I may give him a bro-hug or two as well.”

Funny thing is, it wouldn’t be the strangest thing if Pain was successful in his mission. Grohl and the Foos are themselves fans of crowdfunding, and have been known to play crowdfunded shows, most notably near Grohl’s hometown in Richmond, Virginia in 2014.

Grohl has also spoken about the positive potential of crowdfunding for the future of music in the media.

“I’m telling you, it could become the way that bands decide where they want to play,” he said in interview with Rolling Stone. “It’s a fun thing; it sort of changes the game… If we hear that people want us to come somewhere, maybe we’ll come there.”

It’s unclear whether that extends to purchasing Grohl himself, and whether Pain’s enterprise is entirely legal, for that matter.

“Hell, I’m not even sure if it’s legal to purchase another human being,” says Pain, “But, I figured it wouldn’t hurt to try, right? Since everyone has their hands out these days, I thought I’d join the party.

“If it is indeed illegal to purchase another human then I’ll spend the money on beer because Dave seems like the kind of person that would want me to drink beer.”

Maybe not be a misplaced assumption, but also unlikely to garner funding partners, perhaps?

Nonetheless, Pain says he feels “extremely humbled” by the campaign. “This is the most fun I’ve had in a very long time,” he said on Twitter.

No word from Dave yet on being bought.
