Madonna is set to deliver a Prince tribute at this year’s Billboard Music Awards but a new petition has been started to demand that she’s not the only artist paying tribute.
A petition posted on change.org says, “We cannot let Madonna be the main and only artist tributing Prince during the 2016 Billboard Awards.”
“He is more than worthy of a better choice as a main performer.”
The petition has gained close to 3,700 signatures at the time of writing nearing its goal of 5,000.
While the petition itself doesn’t name any other acts that should be added to the tribute, comments have recommended Janelle Monae, Lenny Kravitz, Shelia E and Mint Condition among others be added.
Madonna and Prince had a turbulent relationship. They dated briefly in 1985 and Prince worked with Madonna on her Like A Prayer record, playing guitar on the title track as well as Keep It Together and Act Of Contrition. The pair also worked together on Love Song.
Following that they spent many years feuding with Madonna once calling Prince a “little troll” but they had reportedly reconciled over the past few years.
The Billboard Music Awards are set to go down on 22nd May. At this stage Madonna will be the only artist paying tribute on stage.
