Watch Courtney Barnett’s Gorgeous Acoustic Cover Of The Lemonheads’ ‘Paid To Smile’

Courtney Barnett has performed a cover of a classic track by American alt-rockers The Lemonheads, and footage of the all-acoustic take has now hit the interwebs.

Over the weekend, Barnett performed a short set for ‘The Strombo Show’ on Canada’s CBC Radio 2, which included a gorgeous version on The Lemonheads’ song Paid To Smile, which appears on their 1993 album Come On And Feel The Lemonheads.

While on ‘The Strombo Show’, Barnett also performed stripped-back versions her original tracks Dead Fox and Nobody Really Cares If You Don’t Go To The Party. Catch all three performances in the clip below.

Speaking to ‘The Strombo Show’ host George Stroumboulopoulos, Barnett also recalled memories of her earliest musical influences, saying, “I wrote a lot of poetry when I was a kid, so when I started playing guitar, they turned very quickly into lyrics and I had songs.

“When I was a kid, we didn’t have CD player, we had two mixtapes that our neighbour made us and it had a mixture of Nirvana, Guns N’ Roses, Jimi Hendrix and Alanis Morisette – we didn’t have that much variety. That was our thing.”

Barnett is a well-known fan of The Lemonheads, having shared a cover of the band’s song Being Around back in 2014 and going on to perform it at a number of her shows. Watch her cover Paid To Smile from 5:50 in the video below.
