The Avalanches are sure making up for lost time, with new single Subways the third track to be taken from forthcoming album Wildflower in almost as many weeks. That’s a stark contrast to the 16 years they made fans wait for the album in the first place. But hey, with the album itself due to hit stores in just over two weeks, it won’t be long until fans can finally listen to the whole thing.
The track itself has more of the classic Avalanches vibe of songs like Since I Left You and Frontier Psychiatry than the twisted hip hop of lead single Frankie Sinatra. It’s accompanied by minimal visuals by Emi Ueoka, which eases right back on the craziness of the Frankie video.
Sampling Chandra’s Subways and Graham Bonnet’s version of The Bee Gees’ Warm Ride, the track is backed by the kind of irresistibly funky bassline and shimmering textures that made The Avalanches famous in the first place. Teased by the band back in May, it’s sure to satisfy those purist fans out there who are longing for more of the group’s early sound.
Subways of course follows the release of the MF Doom and Danny Brown featuring Frankie Sinatra, as well as the Jonathan Donahue (Mercury Rev) assisted Colours. On top of that, the group’s collaboration with Toro y Moi surfaced online earlier this year, but was soon taken down, meanwhile the album also promises appearances from the likes of Father John Misty, Biz Markie, and many others. So yeah, it’s a pretty star studded affair.
Wildflower itself is of course due for release on Friday 8th July via Modular/Astralwerks/XL/EMI, but in the meantime why don’t you have a listen to Subways here.
