A Lock Of David Bowie’s Hair Sold For Four Times More Than Expected

Last week, we reported that a lock of David Bowie‘s hair was going to auction and was expected to sell for $6,000 but it sold over the weekend, blowing that figure out of the water.

As NME reports, the strand of hair snipped from the legend in 1983 sold for over $24,000 in an auction in Los Angeles which is quite phenomenal for a little bit of hair.

Wendy Farrier, who cut the hair from his for a Madame Tussauds wig, has kept the hair for 33 years but had finally decided to give it up and it seems it was well worth her while.

The buyers who attended the LA auction obviously came with full pockets because Prince‘s yellow cloud guitar sold for over $180,000 at the same auction to Jim Irsay, owner of the Indianapolis Colts football team. Back in December he also paid nearly $3 million for a drum kit used by Ringo Starr.

There were still a few items at the auction that didn’t manage to sell. A signed copy of Bowie’s 1971 record Hunky Dory failed to meet its reserve price of $830 as did an alternative sleeve for Station To Station which was going for a reserve price of $1330.

The auction comes just under six months after Bowie’s death on 10th January.
