Weet Bix Want To Give You $10K To Help Reimagine Their Classic Jingle

The Weet Bix theme song is a goddam Aussie institution, right up there with Happy Little Vegemite, Good Onya Mum, Tip-Top’s The One and that random banana song that still seems to get stuck in my head every time I peel the skin off one of the curvy yellow bastards.

But much like the cereal that’s been sitting at the bottom of your nan’s cupboard since 1998, breakfast juggernaut Sanitarium reckons the old Aussie Kids Are Weet Bix Kids anthem has gotten a bit stale, and could do with an update.

So they’ve launched a competition to do just that, putting the call out to Aussie musos to help rewrite and perform the now 30-year-old iconic brekky anthem.

And the tastiest part? The winner will pocket a cool $10K (which, let’s face it, is a lot of Bix) plus a Sanitarium prize pack and a half-day studio recording sesh.

Two runners up will also score $3K (2nd prize) and $2K (3rd place) cash, plus a prize pack, while all the best versions of the choon will be shortlisted for airtime in a new TV ad.

And that’s not all, as reported by The Music Network, the cereal giant has also enlisted the help of a bunch of big Aussie names to add even more fibre to the project, including country music stars Troy Cassar-Daley and Amber Lawrence, pop singer/Neighbours actor Jai Waetford, singer/songwriter Fletcher Pilon, opera singer Greta Bradman, singer Andrew Lambrou, duo Jess and Matt, the Sydney Youth Orchestra and the Sydney Children’s Choir, some of whom will also be starring in the revamped television commercial.

The only guideline for budding composers is that the chorus of the song (i.e. the “Aussie kids are Weet Bix Kids” part) needs to stay as is, but you’re free to completely scrap & rewrite the intro and middle verse.

We look forward to seeing the classic jingle inevitably reimagined as a indie folk jam, stadium rock stormer or trap banger.

Entries are open to Aussie Kids (and adults) aged 13 years or over, and run from RIGHT NOW through to August 5th.
