8 Prince Covers That Will Definitely Be Going Down At Splendour In The Grass 2016

There’s been many losses in the music community this year, and one of the most upsetting and most unexpected passing was Prince. After his death, artists around the world paid tribute to the icon and legend by performing their favourite songs of his at concerts.

Though a couple of months have passed since we said goodnight, sweet prince, we are hoping that a few artists are gonna pay tribute to him at one of his favourite festivals that he never attended or maybe even knew about at all, Splendour in the Grass. Here’s a few of our ideal covers we have our fingers crossed for.

Nothing Compares 2 U – Santigold

This wasn’t a hit for Prince himself, but is one of his most well known songs thanks to Sinead O’Connor’s interpretation. It would also be perfect for Santigold, as with a slight tweaking of the lyrics Nothing Compares To Me would be a great prelude into her recent hit Can’t Get Enough Of Myself.

1999 – The Avalanches

Not only does this song represent how ahead of his time Prince was, it also represents how many years we will be waiting for the third album from The Avalanches.

Let’s Go Crazy – Matt Corby

We all know and love Matt Corby and his chilled out, relaxed style. But what we’ve been waiting for in his music is to take songs that aren’t chilled or relaxed and are actually really fun and great, then tear them apart, and sing them over guitar plucked arpeggios so that we can all weep to those lovely amazing songs. Let’s Go Crazy is that song. For years it was the opener to many a Prince gig, now it will be the opener to everyone’s tear ducts.

Kiss – Lapsley

It’s not too hard to imagine this British songstress finishing one of her uplifting bangers such as Love Is Blind or Hurt Me, and kicking off this sex anthem with a guttural “UH!” Talk about a smooth transition.

Purple Rain – James Blake

Imagine if Purple Rain was still nine minutes long, but never built up to anything? This is your chance to see that as a reality. This song was written to be stripped back to a synth or two and Blake’s quiet croon. We also think this one will be best viewed via a periscope live-stream on Twitter or Facebook Live stream, even if you’re at the festival!

Sometimes It Snows In April – Lido

This song was begging for a sprawling EDM remix upon its release and we reckon Lido is the man to do it. The artist first made a name for themselves with their chopped and spliced remixes taking over the blogosphere a couple of years back. Lido could really work some magic on this acoustic track.

Sexy M.F. – King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard

There’s only one band that could do this classic track off Love Symbol justice. We love the idea of ol’ mate Gizzard rapping over that sultry bass line. Not far afield from their recent work, they could probably slip it right into the loop of Nonagon Infinity and no one would notice.

The Beautiful Ones – Courtney Barnett

Without a doubt, Courtney Barnett is the one single person on the lineup this year who’d be able to pull off the incredible vocals and melodies of this song. Last year Florence Welch may have been a contender, but this year it’s Barnett or bust.

Splendour In The Grass is on this week from the 22nd to the 24th of September. Check out all the action right here all weekend on Music Feeds!
