Melbourne Youth Are Listening To Gold FM More Than Triple J Now

The ABC‘s youth radio broadcaster triple j has lost significant ground to the classic hits station Gold FM in Melbourne’s latest radio ratings, with young people now supposedly listening to Gold FM more than they are to triple j.

As Fairfax Media reports, triple j has drawn 4.5 per cent of teenage radio listeners in Melbourne, while Gold FM has taken 5.8 per cent. What’s more, young adults under 25 now also prefer a bit of John Farnham over a bit of Flume, with Gold FM overtaking triple j in that category.

Triple j is still doing well in the 25-39 age group though, with a 12.5 per cent share against Gold FM‘s 8.2 per cent, but it has taken hits in all other categories in the latest ratings survey, down 1.6 per cent in Melbourne overall.

The youth broadcaster did make significant gains in Sydney though, with the station increasing 0.4 per cent and the biggest gains coming from Matt Okine & Alex Dyson’s ‘Breakfast’ show. Sydney was the only major city where triple j was the preferred station for 18-24 year-olds, while SmoothFM remains the city’s number one radio station overall.
