Listen: The Struggle By Liam Finn

Hirsute New Zealand troubadour and carrier of all kinds of traditions, Liam Finn, had a fairly quiet 2010 by his standards, barring of course his misguided participation in the woeful Antipodean supergroup project BARB, who released their awful eponymous album last year.

Better times are ahead, it seems, and a first listen to what his second LP will sound like has emerged in the form of new song The Struggle, which you can listen to below.

The song is taken from the follow-up to his 2008 acclaimed debut (that hasn’t really aged well) I’ll Be Lightning. Entitled FOMO, the album is due for release in June through Liberation Music. Finn recorded the album at his dad Neil’s Roundhead Studios in Auckland, entirely in analogue. On production duties was Burke Reid, whose CV includes PVT, Dan Kelly, The Drones, Gareth Liddiard‘s solo work and The Mess Hall.

Liam is currently on tour in the US, where he has been enjoying previewing the new album as well as revisiting his older material.

“It’s so much fun to hear the old songs again with a full band after getting so used to playing them all stripped back,” Mess and Noise has him quoted as saying.

Finn is currently touring as Liam Finn and The Come Agains (with younger brother Elroy on drums), while one would expect Australian dates to be announced in the near future.
