$100K Raised For Charity In Sale Of Sydney’s Kings Cross Coke Sign

Sydney’s Kings Cross Coke sign has officially been split up and sold to different owners, with an eBay auction earning more than $100,000 for charity.

The sign, which has been a landmark for Sydneysiders since 1974, was dismantled recently, with the letters put up for auction. Its disappearance is somewhat of a metaphor for Kings Cross’ now limited nightlife, but the money raised is going to Kings Cross’ Wayside Chapel, which has been helping local people in need for over 50 years, so that’s a plus.

Every single letter of the sign was sold off, which means a bunch of lucky people now own a 6m high, 65kg letter that they’re no doubt going to have plenty of space to house. Some of them are even being shipped overseas.

Incase you were wondering, the most expensive letter of the Coca-Cola was the third ‘C’ which went for $18,700. Interestingly, the least expensive were the two other ‘C’ letters going for $10,300. Catch the full list of prices over on eBay.

While the Coke sign as we know it is gone, there will be a replacement. The neon lights are being replaced with environmentally-friendly halogens so that it’s not churning through energy. It will be switched on at 6:30pm on Thursday, 15th September, if you want to stop by and have a peak.
