Paul Kelly & Charlie Owen To Release Anthology Of Funeral Songs, Announces Tour Dates

Esteemed Australian musician and straight-up poet Paul Kelly has announced a new collaborative venture with fellow esteemed Australian musician Charlie Owen. Titled Death’s Dateless Night, the album is an anthology of songs requested at funerals, and the pair will be touring it through some of the countries most iconic holy locations.

The concept around the album stems from songs that Kelly, and Owen would want played at their funerals, and what they would play at each others. According to Kelly, the songs were largely written by other greats such as Cole Porter, Townes Van Zandt, Leonard Cohen, Hank Williams, Lennon/McCartney with the pair adding a flavour of their own to each.

Rather than a brooding, sombre release, the pair found that interestingly the songs people request aren’t all doom and gloom a la Frank Sinatra’s My Way, which I played at my Grandma’s funeral (RIP).

The album will be released on Friday, 7th October, a month or so before the pair take it on the road, playing only churches around the country. They’re keeping it a tight knit affair with only family joining them on the run including Kelly’s daughters Maddy and Memphis who will be there to provide backup vocals.
