Christmas Is Cancelled: Brand New Aren’t Releasing A New Album This Year

Brand New have taken to socials to explain why they won’t actually be releasing a new album this year, even after teasing the possibility of one.

Fans will remember that earlier in the year, Brand New pretty much let slip that they were working on a new album. However, it seems they promised more than they could deliver.

Today’s announcement from the band begins with, “At some point previous, we, Brand New, admitted our plans to release a record this year. These plans were authentic, but we are changing them.”

The post doesn’t really go into whether or not this means the album will be out next year, or the year after that, or if it will be released at all. While it sounds like they did the leg work, it seems as though the material was never polished off:

“While there exists a collection of songs that, right now, some would call fit to be an album, to us it is not complete enough, refined enough, or edited thoroughly enough to be something we would call finished or essential,” the band say.

As per Brand New folklore, this was going to be their last album before finally splitting up. The note finishes with similar sentiment, saying, “What’s left should be a strange demise, but hopefully one as loud and as fun as the rest of our time together has been … Please send flowers.”

Things were looking good, too. The band backed up the album talk with a legit new track called I Am A Nightmare, which had it’s own cover art and everything.

However, in a three-steps-forward-two-steps-back routine, frontman Jesse Lacey confessed, on stage, that the band was “done” and that “this isn’t gonna last much longer, but it’s been so special for so long”.

Around this time, the band even released a line of merch which depicted an actual expiry date for the group, with the words, “Brand New 2000-2018.” Fingers crossed the date hasn’t moved forward.

As a consolation for fans, Brand New will be performing their hugely important 2008 album God And The Devil Are Raging Inside Me live on their upcoming US tour. Hopefully they expand that tour to Australia, but we’re not counting on it.
