Kendrick Lamar Reveals He’s Working On A New Album With Legendary Producer Rick Rubin

Kendrick Lamar‘s To Pimp A Butterfly is one of the most important albums of the last decade, so understandably everyone is watching the Compton rapper’s next move.

He’s started working on the follow-up, and spoke for GQ with legendary producer Rick Rubin, who has worked with hip hop legends like Kanye West, Run D.M.C. and Eminem.

While Lamar admitted that it’s too “soon” to speak directly about the direction of the new record, he did admit that he’s starting to form a sketch of what he wants it to look like.

“I have ideas,” he told Rubin at the producer’s Malibu home.

“I have ideas and I have a certain approach. But I wanna see what it manifests. I wanna put all the paint on the wall and see where that goes. Maybe you can help me with that.”

From there, Rubin agreed and Lamar ended the interview by saying, “I’m in a creative zone,” agreeing to go and record with the producer straight after.

Who knows what will manifest from, but if Rubin’s previous collaborations are anything to go by, it’s going to be something pretty special.

Earlier this year, Lamar released untitled unmastered featuring offcuts from To Pimp A Butterfly, but apparently he has even more where that came from.

“I have so many floating around—24 bars, 16 bars, hooks and choruses and bridges and ideas. References that I had in mind for people to sing,” he said.

The whole interview is an insight into the last few years for Lamar and unbelievably it’s the first time Lamar and Rubin have ever met. You can watch it below.
