New ‘Countdown’-Inspired Music TV Show Reportedly In The Works

Ignoring judge-centric television shows like The X Factor and The Voice, there really aren’t very many (if any) captivating music television shows on air right now, but that may all be set to change.

Australian entrepreneur Ron Creevey, who owns Kings Cross studio The X Studio, says he wants to bring a show similar to Countdown to TV to help fill that gap.

Countdown aired between 1974 and 1987, and was hosted by Molly Meldrum. The likes of AC/DC, Olivia Newtown John, INXS and Kylie Minogue passed through the studios, and the show became an institution of Aussie music television.

Now, speaking to The Music, Creevey says that The X Studios already has exclusive content from about 100 different artists. Over the next year he predicts they’ll have 40-50 local bands and another 15 international acts pass through the studio, which he’s hoping to take advantage of.

“We’ve got so much content running through the studio and we sit there and we watch TV… we just have this huge void now that exists when it comes to music,” he says.

Creevey wants to develop a 30 minute show similar to Countdown that can not only promote artists but live music venues.

“The more live venues that want to put bands on in Australia, we’d love to be able to promote them,” he says.

Creevey’s not sure exactly when the show will come to fruition, but he says he’s already in the process of finding a host for the show, which he calls a “big decision” given that Meldrum is the benchmark.

“It wasn’t just the fact that Molly was, like, the Wikipedia of music, he equally had the ability to communicate with all types of bands on a level that I suppose most interviewers wouldn’t have gone near,” he says.

The host of the show will be the “new face” of interviewing acts in Australia if the programme launches, according to Creevey.

Creevey is also the man behind the release of previously unheard music by the late INXS frontman Michael Hutchence. That music will also be used in a documentary about the last year’s of the singer’s life. It’s due for release in 2017, marking the 20th anniversary of his death.
