Bernard Fanning, Sarah Blasko & Paul Dempsey To Play David Bowie Tribute Concert

An all-star team of Aussie musos has been recruited for the Aussie leg of a global concert series tipping its hat to the late David Bowie, in honour of what would have been the legend’s 70th birthday.

Bernard Fanning, Sarah Blasko and Paul Dempsey will all perform at the Sydney Opera House on Sunday, 29th January, for a one-off Aussie event dubbed Celebrating David Bowie, alongside two dozen other musicians including former Bowie band members Mike Garson, Adrian Belew and Earl Slick, who performed on the Star Man’s last two albums.

The core ensemble will be rounded out by Angelo Moore from Fishbone, Latin Grammy Award Winner Gaby Moreno, Bernard Fowler from The Rolling Stones, Joe Sumner, and a bunch of other talented musos.

Individually, these former Bowie band members performed, wrote and recorded with the great man across multiple decades, including on 1973’s Ziggy Stardust tour, the Diamond Dogs tour and Isolar II (Heroes) tour, right up to the hugely successful Serious Moonlight tour, the Sound And Vision greatest hits tour and Bowie’s final A Reality Tour. Many of them also appeared on Bowie’s album The Next Day.

Event organisers are stressing that this is more than just a tribute concert, describing it as “David Bowie people playing David Bowie music, David Bowie style”.

“This is the first and last time this inner circle will do anything like this and these global shows are likely to be the last time that they perform his music together,” organisers say. “Sadly, this may be the closest anyone will come to a David Bowie live experience ever again.”

The concert series is taking place around the world, in cities which have a strong connection with Bowie and his work, so it looks like Sydney is the lucky one here in Australia.

Aussie Bowie lovers who can’t make the trip to the Sydney Opera House can still catch the Bowie In Berlin concert series in honour of the 40th anniversary of the Thin White Duke’s 1977 album Low, which will be making its way around the country in January.
