Disturbed’s David Draiman Isn’t Happy About Competing With Beyoncé For A Rock Grammy

Disturbed’s frontman David Draiman isn’t cool with going head-to-head with Beyoncé for Best Rock Performance at the 2017 Grammy Awards. The vocalist has spoken out about the genre-bending clash, stating that “something has gone wrong”.

Of course, when speaking about the other artists nominated for the award, Draiman did so “with all due respect”, explaining to Billboard in some detail why he found Beyoncé’s nomination to be particularly bizarre.

“Is it strange [to be up against Beyoncé]? I think the reason you asked the question is because it is. It definitely stands out — like, one of these things is not like the other, you know? But what are you going to do?”

He adds, “When did it all become ‘rock’? If you look at every other genre, there are so many categories and sub-categories. For rock, this is all we’ve got, so everything ends up being jammed into these four categories. Is it diverse? Absolutely. It’s too diverse!

“When you can have, with all due respect, a Beyonce and a Disturbed in the same category, something has gone wrong. Not taking anything away from her whatsoever, we’re just very different from each other.”

To be fair, considering Disturbed are only nominated for their cover of Simon & Garfunkel’s folk hit The Sound Of Silence, it’s unclear whether or not they actually have any legs to stand on in this argument. Speaking of their nomination, Draiman added, “It wasn’t something that we expected.”

“This song seems to have touched and affected so many different people. It feels wonderful. It’s been tangible now, maybe more than ever — the recognition factor has multiplied like tenfold, which is weird for me.”

Beyoncé, tagged for her her Jack White collaboration Don’t Hurt Yourself in the Best Rock Performance category, is set to take the Grammys by storm after being nominated for a slew of awards in four different genres.

We, for one, welcome our new rock overlord.
