Hear The Jesus And Mary Chain’s First New Song In A Decade, ‘Amputation’

Christmas has come early for fans of The Jesus And Mary Chain, with the iconic post-punks dropping their first new tune in almost ten years down our proverbial chimneys.

Dubbed Amputation, the track has been sliced off the band’s first album in a staggering 18 years, the freshly announced Damage And Joy, which was previously foretold to arrive in 2017.

The new record will mark the group’s first since 1998’s Munki. It was produced by Youth (Killing Joke co-founder Martin Glover), who also tracked bass on the LP, with musical contribs from the band’s touring drummer Brian Young and former Lush bassist Phil King.

“We started to – can you believe? – listen to each other a bit more,” singer Jim Reid says in a statement (Via Rolling Stone).

“In the last couple of years, we’ve buried the hatchet to some degree, and thankfully not into each other. Most people who know us would say that we haven’t mellowed that much. I think it was to do with the fact, dare I say it, that wisdom comes with age. Let’s live and let live, and let’s take each other’s opinions into account.”

Needless to say, new material from the Mary Chain is kind of a big deal. With almost 20 years between albums, it’s going to be interesting to see how the band’s sound has developed.

Flagship single Amputation seems to bear all the hallmarks of classic J&MC, with reverb-drenched guitar lines and singer Jim Reid’s chill-yet-sassy pop vocals, but it’s also sporting some brand new electro dabblings and production tricks.

The band last toured Australia in 2015 for the 30th anniversary of Psychocandy, but with a new album on the way, hopefully we’ll be seeing their gravity-defying hair do’s again real soon.
