Feed Your Christmas Blues With Ryan Adams’ Lonesome New Tune, ‘To Be Without You’

Christmas is supposed to be the happiest time of year, but for some folks it actually sucks a big festive bag of dicks, serving to only amplify the inherent feelings of loneliness, grief, loss and estrangement they already feel when everyone else isn’t shacked up drinking eggnog and being merry with their loved ones.

But if you’re one of these sad losers than never fear, Ryan Adams is here to help soundtrack your Yuletide Blues with a sorrowful little folk number called To Be Without You.

The singer mulls over his feelings of heartbreak and loneliness in this slide guitar-laced, bordering-on-country style ballad — the second single off his forthcoming album Prisoner — and it turns out his dark, brooding lyrics come from a very real place.

“It broke my soul in a zillion pieces writing this,” the bard tells Rolling Stone about the song and its host LP. “This record mattered more to me than any record before it, and my life depended on making it. I would have died inside if I hadn’t. I was broken. I don’t know what it is. But I know I had to write it and I know I have to sing these songs so I can live and keep living and breathing.”

Adams’ dark period stemmed from his “very public divorce”, which occurred during the album-writing process.

So feed those melancholy holiday feels with his heartsick new ditty To Be Without You and let the music do its magical healy thing on your soul.

But seriously though, lots of people really do get sad over the festive season, and if you’re one of those people and blasting Ryan Adams doesn’t help, you can visit the mindhealthconnect website for more assistance.
