WA Liberal Party Could Cop A Fine For Cringeworthy Daft Punk Dance

The campaign launch of the Western Australian Liberal party last weekend ahead of their forthcoming state election resulted in one of the most hilariously cringe-worthy videos of all time.

The viral video features panning shots of various members of the party clapping along to Daft Punk’s iconic 2001 hit ‘One More Time’, and reflected perhaps the last year that any of the members of the party were considered ‘cool’.

But they might not be smiling for long. Since the video shared on 9 News Perth, Junkee has confirmed that the Libs failed to secure a public performing license to play the song.

The Libs held their party launch at the University of Western Australia, and while APRA AMCOS allows universities an umbrella license for their own events, this doesn’t extend to events hosted groups from outside the university. In this case, Australian law requires organisations to obtain a public performance lisence from APRA AMCOS to play music at a public function.

Its unclear at this stage whether the issue will be followed up by either APRA AMCOS or Daft Punk’s rights holders, but if found guilty whoever was ultimately responsible could be up for $60,000 in fines and five years in prison.
