Phil Jamieson Talks Potential Grinspoon Reunion

UPDATE 03/04/17: Grinspoon have announced that they’re reuniting for a 2017 national tour.

ORIGINAL STORY: ‘Tis the season for big Aussie bands reuniting. In the space of a few months, we’ve seen homegrown acts like Jet, Midnight Oil, Crowded House, George and End Of Fashion all dust off their guitars, so when Music Feeds got the chance to chat with Grinspoon front-champ Phil Jamieson, we couldn’t help but ask whether there might be similar hopes of seeing Grinners back together sometime soon.

The alt-rock ledgehammers — who briefly reunited to support Cold Chisel two years ago — have otherwise been on indefinite hiatus since 2013, but Jamo says there’s definitely a chance of them returning to rock our socks off again one day.

“I’d like that to happen,” Jamieson says. “But logistically, I don’t know. It has to be a good plan to make sure it’s not shit. I don’t want it to be shit,” he laughs.

“I guess that comes to management — people like our manager, who’s a big help — to facilitate that in some way, cause we’re all just off doing heaps of shit now. So yeah, I’d like it to happen, but at the moment I’m not overly sure when, or how, or maybe, or if it will.

“But we’re not — you know — not talking, we’re all friends and stuff. But everyone’s kind of got a life now,” Jamieson says.

“Back in Grinspoon it was just ‘tour, make a record, tour, make a record’, so once we stopped doing that, we were kind of like, ‘Oh, this is nice! We can go to the beach! Walk the dog!’

“Everyone’s become a bit more adult in some ways. It’s a bit of a shame [laughs] but it kind of has to happen. It’s kind of inevitable. But never say never, right?

“There’s a lot moving parts in Grinspoon, and it’s just a matter of getting it all together.”

Well, we’ll be keeping our fingers crossed that that does happen sooner or later, but in the meantime, you can catch Phil Jamieson flexing his singing — and acting — chops in the Australian debut of Green Day’s ‘American Idiot’ musical, which premiered in Queensland last night.

Jamo — who it turns out has been using some of his rehearsal down time up north to write some new music, just for fun — is sharing the lead role of St Jimmy with The Living End’s Chris Cheney, and he spoke to Music Feeds about the whole experience so far.

The full interview is coming.
