Hear AFI & No Doubt Supergroup Dreamcar’s Long-Awaited First Single

The musical mega-squadron that teams No Doubt‘s Tony Kanal, Tom Dumont and Adrian Young with AFI frontman Davey Havok otherwise known as Dreamcar — have just unleashed the first fruits of their blockbuster collaboration in the form of their debut single ‘Kill For Candy’.

The group’s long-awaited tune solves the riddle of ‘what do you get when you cross AFI and No Doubt?’ with some pretty surprising results.

First up, those of you anticipating heavy rock might find yourselves a tad disappointed. ‘Kill For Candy’ is a groovy pop chiller packing some serious ’80s new wave vibes, triggering flashbacks to bands like Duran Duran and The Cure (Havok’s vocals are particularly Robert Smith-esque).

What’s more, bassist Tony Kanal reckons we can expect more of the same from the group’s first full-length LP, which is due out on Friday, 12th May.

“There are a lot of things on the album that are Eighties-influenced,” Kanal tells Rolling Stone. “But I feel like what we’ve created is something very fresh and new, too. You have to find that balance, and I think we’ve achieved that.

“I can’t stop listening to it, so that’s always a good sign for me,” he continues. “When I’ve worked on something that I can’t stop listening to—and that I want to get in my car and listen to—it always makes me feel really good. You have this excitement to share it with everybody.”

Speaking about the disc’s first single, Havok tells Alt Press, “There’s an honesty in all of my lyrics. This one speaks to a perhaps dangerous and unhealthy desire for the sweet.”

Meanwhile, the dudes have just been announced on the lineup for Coachella 2017, which has no doubt got fans salivating for more tour dates on the horizon.

However, it may be more likely that Aussies will see Havok’s main men AFI tour down under before we see Dreamcar, with the frontman telling Music Feeds in a recent interview that they’re eyeballing an Australian tour for this year off the back of their new self-titled album.
