Pink Floyd Just Had A Species Of Prawn Named After Them

Prog-rock icons Pink Floyd have had yet another prestigious honour bestowed upon them. The only thing is, it’s something most Aussies might chuck on the barbie…

Yep, a new species of prawn (or shrimp, if you’re a weirdo) has been named after the band, for some reason.

The new species, discovered by a team of scientists on the Pacific coast of Panama, has now been given the amazing scientific name “Synalpheus Pinkfloydi”.

“Why?” you ask?

Well, it turns out that old mate Pinkfloydi is a pretty hardcore prawn; it can kill small fish by closing its large pink claw so quickly that it creates a huge sound that’s louder than some rock shows.

Dr. Sammy De Grave, who’s Head Of Research at Oxford University’s Museum of National History, has supposedly been waiting for years to have the opportunity to name a new species after his favourite band.

“I have been listening to Floyd since The Wall was released in 1979, when I was 14 years old,” he says.

“I’ve seen them play live several times since, including the Hyde Park reunion gig for Live 8 in 2005. The description of this new species of pistol shrimp was the perfect opportunity to finally give a nod to my favourite band.”

All in all, it’s just another shrimp in the wall of Pink Floyd’s many achievements.
