Troye Sivan, Missy Higgins, Jack Vidgen, Zoe Badwi, and more musicians have banded together as part of a stack of comedians, presenters and actors pushing for a mandatory anti-bullying, anti-violence program in Australian schools.
The initiative is pushing specifically for the program to have an LGBTI focus, and also takes aim at Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and his government’s decision not to renew Safe Schools funding recently.
The group of media personalities and musicians are lobbying the PM along with Education Minister Simon Birmingham to roll out a national program teaching tolerance and respect of LGBTI people, that will consult education and medical experts, as well as community groups on a regular basis.
“In schools across Australia, thousands of kids like me are bullied on a daily basis because of their sexuality,” says Sivan. “They’re also bullied based on their religion, race, gender, faith, disability, skin conditions, social standing or political persuasions.”
“That’s why I’m getting behind a new push in the form of a letter to the Australian Prime Minister to roll-out a national anti-bullying, anti-violence program in schools across Australia where students are taught to respect and tolerate those who are like me.”
