A brewery in Denmark have done the unthinkable and used urine from a music festival in the process of creating a new beer.
BBC reports that the 50,000 litres of urine was collected from 100,000 punters who attended Rosklide festival in Northern Europe two years ago. At the time festival organisers collected the urine at specially appointed bathrooms with their own storage tanks, while women wanted to use them were given a “shewee”.
There’s no piss in the actual beer though, with the urine instead used to fertilise the fields where the barley for the beer was grown, though they brewery Norrebro Byghus have decided to call the brew “Pisner”
“When the news that we had started brewing the Pisner came out, a lot of people thought we were filtering the urine to put it directly in the beer and we had a good laugh about that,” Henrik Vang, chief executive of Norrebro Bryghus Brewery said.
Denmark’s agriculture and food council is calling the technique “beercycling.” They’ve also got high hopes that “Pisner” catches on as “the ultimate sustainable hipster beer.”
