Music Feeds Faves – 30/06/17

The Music Feeds team is ready to wax lyrical about tunes we’re digging and show how ~cool~ we are when dropping that new music knowledge. Here we’ve wrangled together the fresh new songs that made an impact on us, for the ultimate new music playlist. It’s Music Feeds Faves!

St Vincent – ‘New York’

Thank the music gods, St Vincent has returned. “You’re the only motherfucker in the city who can handle me,” sings Annie Clark on her new single ‘New York’. Despite the tone those lyrics may suggest in print, ‘New York’ is a tender, bittersweet piano-driven ballad peppered with cinematic strings and melancholic lyrics, and sees Clark take a new direction to the bold, shredder of an album that was her 2014 self-titled record. In a 2016 interview, Clark indictaed this sonic shift would appear in her forthcoming album, predicting the as yet announced record would be “the deepest, boldest work I’ve ever done.” Really, it can’t arrive soon enough. / Nastassia Baroni, Managing Editor

Addicted To This – ‘Rage’

Fresh-faced Sydney crew Addicted To This are getting fans raging with their latest piece of post-hardcore ‘Rage’. The stand-alone single is a fiery anthem about making it through the shittier times, powered by guitars that snigger with pop-punk ‘tude and dual assault metalcore-style vocals that team clean melodies with ground-shaking screams. It’s just our second dose of what this young trio has to offer but from fan reactions on YouTube so far, it’s safe to say they’re already living up to their name. / Emmy Mack, Senior Staff Writer

Mama Kin Spender – ‘Air Between Us’

Mama Kin and Spender are impressively talented musicians in their own right but something quite magical happens when you put the two together. ‘Air Between Us’ is like a warm hug from a friend after a particularly trying time. Packed with inviting and joyous harmonies, steadying and reassuring percussion and celebratory refrains delivered by an accompanying gospel choir. The uplifting track and its dizzyingly jubilant video are but the first taste of what’s to come from Mama Kin Spender, their collaborative album Golden Magnets set to be released in March 2018. They’ll also be bringing the happy to a bunch of upcoming 2017 festival sets. / Nastassia Baroni, Managing Editor

The National – ‘Guilty Party’

‘Guilty Party’ is the latest track from Camp National, taken from their upcoming new album Sleep Well Beast. It’s also one of the more interesting songs we’ve heard from the dad-bod-alt-rockers in a while, with its syncopated rhythms, glitchy electronics, strings and that hovering sadness for lost time.

“The video is a dream about memory and the degradation of memory; it’s about distance in time and space,” says director Casey Reas.

“Time moves forward, but then backward as memory. The image of the two-faced Roman god Janus, who can look into the past and future, is the core visual language.”

The Church – ‘Another Century’

25 albums into their career, The Church remain one of Australia’s most prolific and exciting musicians. They’ll soon be launching album number 26 but to satiate us in the meantime have offered up ‘Another Century’, a lush orchestration held together by Steve Kilbey’s ever-captivating voice. On that note, I’ll let Steve take it from here:

“Another Century is a romantic melodic stab of omnichord and guitars and quite unlike any past The Church song,” he says. “The lyrics fell out of the sky very quickly and the music is dreamy and evocative of past futures.”

New album details and tour plans for The Church are expected to be announced shortly. / Nastassia Baroni, Managing Editor
