Former Triple J Host Matt Okine Says He Will Vote To Change The Date Of The Hottest 100

Former triple j breakfast host Matt Okine, who left the station last year, says that he will vote to change the date of the Hottest 100 from 26th January in a new triple j survey.

The broadcaster announced a survey yesterday allowing listeners decide whether they think the date should be changed from Australia Day.

“I will vote to change the date. Yep. Absolutely,” Okine told ABC News.

He’s suggested that they change the date to, “the last Saturday in January,” but acknowledges that might mean some people miss out on hearing the full thing.

“The only people who are going to miss out are people playing Saturday sports, I guess, and a few people who are having to work on Saturdays,” he said.

“There’s always going to be someone who misses out and I’d prefer it not to be…for Indigenous Australians to feel disenfranchised by something that’s supposed to be all inclusive.”

Okine shares the same opinion as the social media campaign that led triple j to review the date of the annual countdown last year. The station has also spent the last 10 months consulting members of the Australian music community about whether or not they should change the date.

Since leaving triple j, Okine has been working on his own musical project under the moniker of Boilermakers and has also produced his own television series for streaming service Stan called The Other Guy.

The Hottest 100 survey will remain open until Wednesday, 9th August and a decision will be made later in the year.
