Weezer Were “About To Sign Off” On Their Own Aussie Tour Before Foo Fighters Called

Weezer have revealed they were planning their very own headline tour of Australia before Foo Fighters convinced the group to join them on their upcoming tour down under.

In a new interview with NME, Weezer frontman Rivers Cuomo says the band were about to lock in their own headline tour of Australia, before Foo Fighters suddenly got in touch.

“We were about to sign off on our own New Zealand and Australia tour, and they gave us a call and were like ‘Do you wanna come with us?’” he says.

“We were like, ‘Damn, stadiums? Where do I sign? Let’s do this.'”

Weezer last toured Australia in a headline capacity back in 2013. In April 2016 the band said they would tour Australia again in January 2017, but that didn’t eventuate.

Speaking about the relationship between the band and Foo Fighters, Cuomo says, “We’re friends and rivals. Friendly bitter rivals.

“I don’t think they think of us as rivals because they’re 10 times bigger than us, but that’s how I feel because we came up at the same time and they put their pedal to the metal, became gigantic, and now we’re opening for them on their stadium tour.

“It’s all good, because they’re obviously amazing and we love the music.”

Speaking with Music Feeds earlier this year, Foo Fighters bassist Nate Mendal said, “It’s funny because we did this tour with Weezer in the states about 12 years ago and it was fun and it worked.

“I think the two bands are really complimentary so we thought, ‘Why not do it again?’ That was the feeling, let’s make it a big party and bring Weezer along.”

Weezer are set to tour Australia with Foo Fighters in January 2018, after they release their new album Pacific Daydream on Friday, 27th October.
