Hottest 100 Voting Is Now Open: Here’s Everything You Need To Know

Voting for triple j‘s Hottest 100 is now open, and while you probably know the drill by now, there are a few new things to keep in mind.

The Voting Schedule

You’ll be able to submit your 10 favourite songs of the year beginning Tuesday, 12th December, with voting officially opening at 8am AEDT right here.

Voting will then close at 9am AEDT Monday, 22nd January, so there’s plenty of time to get your votes in.

The New Hottest 100 Date

The date of the countdown is the biggest change this year, moving from 26th January to the fourth weekend of January, which means the countdown will take place on Saturday, 27th January in 2018.

Triple j made the decision to change the date last month in support of Indigenous Australians (who have long associated 26th January with Invasion Day) and following a survey of its listeners, in which 60 per cent of respondents were in favour of the date being changed.

There was plenty of controversy surrounding the decision too, with the government saying it would be asking triple j to reconsider its decision and Aboriginal leader Warren Mundine criticising the station’s decision to change the Hottest 100 date.

Triple j are sticking with their decision, though.

The Hottest 200

The Hottest 200 — that’s the tracks which placed between 101 and 200 on the countdown — will be counted down the day after the Hottest 100, which will be Sunday, 28th January 2018, making it a full weekend of Hottest 100 and 200 action.

Last Year’s Winners

Last year’s countdown was topped by Flume and his megahit ‘Never Be Like You’, followed by newcomers Amy Shark and Tash Sultana. Violent Soho, despite not nabbing a top 10 spot, had the most appearances in the countdown with five songs.

66 of the songs that made it into the countdown were Australian, while 23 acts also made their first appearance in the countdown.

Triple J’s AIME Partnership

Triple j is teaming up with AIME (the Australian Indigenous Mentoring Experience) again this year, to help them close the education gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australian students. You can buy a t-shirt or simply donate to support. Last year more than $250,000 was raised!

So start thinking about your Hottest 100 votes right now, and go here to vote if you’ve got them sorted. If not, you’ve got plenty of time to make up your mind.
