Love Letter To A Record: Junior Danger On QOTSA’s ‘Rated R’

Many of us can link a certain album to pivotal moments in our lives. Whether it’s the first record you bought with your own money, the chord you first learnt to play on guitar, the song that soundtracked your first kiss, the album that got you those awkward and painful pubescent years or the one that set off light bulbs in your brain and inspired you to take a big leap of faith into the unknown – music is often the catalyst for change in our lives and can even help shape who we become.

In this series, Music Feeds asks artists to reflect on their relationship with music and share with us stories about the effect music has had on their lives.

Here are their love letters to records that forever changed their lives.

Junior Danger: Queens Of The Stone Age – Rated R

An ode to love… Rated R.

I longingly seek passage of return to those sultry desert nights we sweated through in the summer of 2001. I would slide you out of your simple yet seductive attire and, before either of us understood what was happening, you pirouetted and swirled through my feeble mind. A mind which was yet to understand the complexity of which was about to bestow itself upon me.

As the drums rolled in over a landscape of sodden bass and jagged guitars I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. Then, the dirty talk started. Nicotine, valium, vicodin, marijuana, ecstasy and alcohol… Co-co-co-co-co-cocaine. Is this a recipe for disaster or a Feel Good Hit of the Summer? There was only one way to find out so I cut you in… don’t tell anyone.

As the walls starting caving in and the situation become strange ,we devoured a Leg of Lamb and hit the Auto Pilot switch. Better Living Through Chemistry has commenced and we started to recognise Monsters in my Parasol.

Cracks in the Ceiling started to appear as we disappeared into the Fade. We rolled around vigorously in the dust making sweet, sweaty love, I was overcome by a sense of euphoria creeping its way through my veins. As lightning streaked across the sky I realised I’d finally lost my headache, a headache that had plagued me for weeks. I’d finally found a cure.

Today, 18 years on, you visit only in my dreams. I reflect regularly on those summer nights. Two restless souls connected by the union of our desperate and broken bodies, entwined beneath an unforgiving expanse. I crave to hold you again.
