Eighties pop troupe Dexy’s Midnight Runners are working on a new album, reported to be released in 2012. In addition, the band changing their name to simply Dexy’s.
The new LP, yet to have a name, marks the first album from Kevin Rowland and the band since 1985’s Don’t Stand Me Down. The band have opened a new Twitter account, on which the line-up of the group has been confirmed as Rowland along with Mick Talbot (formerly of Style Council), original bass player Pete Williams and Neil Hubbard on guitar.
A post said of the reunion, “Dexys new album. Can’t really say why, because it’s hard to put down to any one thing, but it’s working – it’s early days, but so far so good.”
Another post said of Talbot’s inclusion in the band, “Mick Talbot is a huge part of this, not just his playing, he’s influential in the whole of this process. Commitment beyond the call of duty.”
Dexy’s Midnight Runners, who were known for their gypsyish sense of fashion, hit the number one spot in the UK charts with both Come On Eileen and Geno. Don’t Stand Me Down was the band’s third and final album before splitting up.
Rowland, now 57, has released two solo albums in the last 20 years and is a regular fixture as a DJ in London and around the festival circuit. Dexy’s Midnight Runners were last reunited in 2003 for a successful tour, with the new album marking the first chance to hear original material since the band’s heyday.
