This Instagram Account Is Posting Aussie Festival Lineups Without The Males

An Instagram account posting Australian music festival lineups with all their male acts removed is gaining traction, after launching yesterday just in time for International Women’s Day.

The account, simply called lineupswithoutmales, is going to town on local festivals which are lacking in the lineup diversity department, including the likes of Jumanji Festival, which caused controversy after naming zero female acts on its debut lineup; Download Festival, which only hand a small number of female musos on its roster; and Sets On The Beach’s upcoming event, which is also 100 per cent dudes.

It’s not all bad news, though. The account has also shared a number of lineups today for International Women’s Day, which its creator says they “didn’t even have to edit very much/at all” — we’re talkin’ festivals like Sad Grrrls Fest, Electric Lady and Sunset20North.

In their latest report on the gender gap in Australian music, the ABC confirmed local festival lineups are still overwhelmingly male, with none of the country’s major touring festivals reaching gender parity.

The report named Laneway Festival as Australia’s most gender-diverse festival, with female-identifying artists (or acts featuring both men and women) making up 44 per cent of its 2017 lineup.

On the other hand, Splendour In The Grass and Falls Festival have both slumped in female representation on their latest lineups, down to 29 per cent and 25 per cent respectively.

Last year, research conducted by the University of Sydney found women are “chronically disadvantaged” in the Australian music industry.

It’s still unclear who is behind the lineupswithoutmales account, but Music Feeds has reached out to them for comment.
