PREMIERE: Sydney Producer Oh My My Unveils Dark & Dancey Debut Single ‘Animal House’

Sam Thomlinson of Sydney indie-pop quintet Bad Pony has unveiled his debut single under his producing moniker Oh My My, the darkly dancey ‘Animal House’.

Premiering exclusively via Music Feeds below, the hypnotic track is irresistibly body-moving but has a unique edgy quality to the main vocal, performed by the captivating pipes of Kitrich (James Kitto).

Brooding, eerie and melodically surprising, it’s a tune that Nine Inch Nails fans should dig.

“Inspiration for ‘Animal House’ came in two waves,” Thomlinson explains. “The first while watching a band called Square Peg Round Hole in Philadelphia. They had these amazingly emotive tunes that would go to all these interesting harmonic places, while having a constant pivot point or drone going the whole time. I was amazed by the contrast of simplicity and intricacy.

“I went straight back to our hotel and wrote the chord progression that become ‘Animal House’,” he continues. “I just wanted to keep one note droning while seeing how messed up I could make the chords without ever changing that one constant.

“The second was when I decided I wanted to write the song for a friend who was going through a particularly troubling break-up. Another friend at the time compared the house they were living in, to an ‘Animal House’ and as soon as I came up with the vocal hook, they were the first words that came out. The song fell into place pretty quickly after that.”
