Spotify CEO Claims Metallica Shape Their Live Shows Around What Fans Are Listening To

In what could set an interesting precedent, Spotify CEO Daniel Ek has said that Metallica alter their set lists depending on what city they play in.

According to Quartz, Ek said, in the company’s earnings call on Thursday, that Metallica look at streaming data from a city they play in, so they can note what songs are most popular in any given area.

“You have an artist like Metallica, who changes their setlist on a city-by-city basis just by looking at Spotify data to see, which the most popular songs happened to be in that city,” he said.

“We’ve never before been at a place in time where you could make as many informed decisions and understand your audience as well as we can do now as an artist.”

Metallica are certainly known for paying special, and unique, attention to personalising their live shows. NME reports that they record their live shows so fans can purchase audio files on this official website.

In related news, Metallica are celebrating the 35th anniversary of their debut album, Kill ‘Em All, this week.
