Over 300 Injured After Pier Collapses At Spanish Music Festival

Over 300 people have been injured during a pier collapse at a music festival in northwestern Spain on Sunday night, after a rapper reportedly told the crowd to jump.

The incident occurred in the city of Vigo, and has left five people in a serious condition in hospital, The New York Times reports.

People were reportedly thrown into the water when a 40 metre section of the pier collapsed during a performance from Spanish rapper Rels B, who reportedly told the crowd to jump up and down during his first song.

Enrique López Veiga, the president of the Vigo port authority, told Spanish broadcaster Cadena SER that the collapse occurred “probably either because of excess weight or jumping by the audience”.

Taking to Twitter after the accident, Rels B sent “strength” to the injured and told anyone injured or worried about their friends to seek help.

Festival organisers issued a statement on Monday, claiming that their event “fulfilled the security conditions required by the law”.

An investigation is now underway to determine the cause of the accident.
