Couple Marry On Stage During Flaming Lips Show

The antics of Wayne Coyne and the Flaming Lips are never out of the news for too long, with the latest escapade being that the Oklahoma band have overseen a marriage between fans at a show at Osheaga Festival in Montreal, Canada.

Spinner reports that the band played an instrumental version of Do You Realize as the happy couple – one dressed as Dorothy and one as the lion from The Wizard Of Oz – were wed on stage during the Lips’ set, Coyne grandly announcing, “By the power of the Flaming Lips, the universe and LSD, I now pronounce you man and wife!”

The Flaming Lips’ performance at the Quebec festival was notable in other ways, with the band ploughing through an emotional rendering of their seminal 1999 album The Soft Bulletin in full, with Coyne announcing later that fans may have seen the album performed in its entirety for the “last time ever”. It was after the last chords of The Soft Bulletin that the conjugal ceremony took place.

Osheaga Festival has been around since 2006, and has fast developed a reputation as one of the most interesting and eclectic festivals in North America. This year featured Bright Eyes, Beirut, Lupe Fiasco, Elvis Costello, Eels, Cypress Hill, Crystal Castles and Eminem. With Australian fans increasingly looking overseas for a festival fix (thanks to the exorbitantly high cost of domestic festivals along with the strong dollar), there are worse festivals than Osheaga to consider.

The Flaming Lips will be in Australia later this year for Harvest Festival.
