Alex The Astronaut and Ball Park Music‘s Sam Cromack have pooled their talents at triple j‘s One Night Stand festival to pay homage to their “incredible friend” Luke Liang, a beloved Sydney musician and former Papa vs Pretty member who sadly died last week at the age of 28.
Liang was due to perform at the One Night Stand in St Helens, Tasmania on Saturday, so Alex and Sam honoured his memory with a cover of Bob Dylan’s ‘Blowin’ in the Wind’.
“Music is a magical thing and we’ll really miss Luke, so we just want you to have this moment for you to sing for him too,” Alex told the crowd before the performance.
The pair then led into the anthemic statement of protest, with a chorus of hundreds joining in.
With Cromack affecting his best Dylan, the pair sang and played guitar in unison. They invoked some of their folkiest inclinations, but that’s not to say they didn’t put it across.
Why the song choice? Well, perhaps it expresses a futility and grief not so easily placed in words. Just as equally it could be a statement concerning a pervading blindness to the mental health of artists within the music industry.
Regardless of the duo’s intent, it certainly hits right in the middle of the chest.
