MONA FOMA Announces 2019 Dates For New Launceston Location

UPDATE: The 2019 MONA FOMA Lineup Is Here

ORIGINAL STORY: Tasmania’s boundary-pushing MONA FOMA (aka MOFO) festival has unveiled the dates for next year’s shenanigans, which, in a landmark shift, will not be taking place in the city that bears its name.

After previously announcing that the 2019 event would be moving to Launceston, organisers at Hobart’s the Museum Of Old & New Art (MONA) have today declared that next year’s MOFO will be running from Sunday 13th – Sunday 20th of January, with the main festival weekend happening across Friday 18th – Sunday 20th.

“We have been enthralled with the hospitality, infrastructure, natural beauty and general quirkiness of Launceston,” says program curator Brian Ritchie.

“We’re working with new venues and artists; and we’re really looking forward to sharing this Mona Foma with our festival-goers. We’re excited to say we’ve landed on a festival that will be identifiably Mofo—with a Launceston bent.”

This year’s lineup was headed up by the likes of Gotye and The Violent Femmes, so fans will no doubt be chomping to see what next year’s event holds in store.

The full program is set to be announced on October 12th, with tickets on sale from the 15th.

Interestingly, the MOFO crew are daring southern Tasmanians to buy a discounted early-bird ‘In God We Trust’ three-day festival ticket, despite not knowing who’s playing yet. The hook? If they hate it, David Walsh (MONA owner AKA God) will refund them.

The limited offer of the $79 festival pass is available to Tasmanians who live south of Campbell Town who are also existing subscribers to MOFO’s e-news, and is on sale from now until midnight on Sunday, 23rd September or until sold out.

Refunds, however, are subject to a Redemption Clause, which stipulates that any dissatisfied festival-goer must:

  • Wait 40 days and 40 nights after Mona Foma 2019 to consider their decision
  • Hand write a letter expressing why they hated the festival
  • Personally deliver their letter to a complaints box located 150m offshore from Mona on a floating pontoon

Not a joke.

Meanwhile, Mona’s sister event Dark Mofo has come under threat from the Lord Mayor of Hobart, who’s threatening to cut funding and “put the brakes” on the controversial festival.
