The first 17 acts on the Big Day Out 2012 line-up will be released tomorrow night, and this Friday morning the 3 headlining acts will be revealed. We’ve heard today about some so called ‘confirmed bands’ including Pearl Jam as the headlining band for this year’s festival.

This would back up the news that Cherry Bar organiser, and Triple M reporter, James Young revealed earlier in the month that Pearl Jam were a ‘Hot Rumour’ for Big day Out 2012. Pearl Jam are also currently celebrating their 20th year anniversary, having recently released their Pearl Jam Twenty documentary, as well as playing a number of 20th Anniversary shows.
Queens of the Stoneage are also apparently locked in to play at the festival on the back of an anticipated follow-up album to their 2007 release Era Vulgaris.
Another ‘confirmed act’ we hear is Norwegian electronic music duo Röyksopp, who have been on the cards to return to Australia for a while now after hinting to Dazed magazine that they hope to “visit the Aussies in autumn [Australian spring]”, but it appears their spring visit has been delayed for a summer festival appearance instead.
OFWGKTA will return to Australia for their second visit in less than 12 months after playing a number of shows back in May/June, including Vivid Festival. A Twitter comment from Hodgy Beats back in July reveals him already talking about his plans to return to our country in January. It’s nice to see them back so soon after Tyler’s last visit didn’t seem to go over too well while stopping in Brisbane on their tour.

Radiohead were originally tipped to headline, but Big Day Out organisers put a dampener on it by stating last night via a comment on their Facebook wall that “there are no headliners on the 2012 BDO that start with an R!”, even though @BigDayOutSpy has put them down to headline, as well as this morning, Herald Sun reporter Nui Te Koha stated “Pearl Jam have changed their mind and the BDO has thrown a lot of money at another act … and it looks like Radiohead, which is a fair replacement.” But it looks likely that Radiohead will do arena shows in February.
This year’s festival has a strong ’20th year celebration’ vibe to it; we could see some legendary Aussie acts come out of the woodworks. It’s way too early for Powderfinger or even Silverchair to reform and make a ‘special appearance’, but it would be nice to see some classic bands honour a festival that has put their names in Australian live music history.
