Bootleg Rascal – ‘Sloppy Seconds’

Bootleg Rascal’s new LP ‘Sloppy Seconds’ sees the Gold Coast party duo doubling-down on their rep as one of the most eclectic artists in the country. A sonic smash of genre-bending collabs and reimagined fan favouites, the diverse record could have easily turned out to be something of a Frankenstein’s monster. But instead, Bootleg deliver this outlandish concept with style and ease, the extremities of woozy electronica (‘On A Low – Berghain Remix’) sultry flamenco (‘Sharks – Remix en Espanol’), hip-hop-inflected indie-rock (Holding On 2.0), soul-slicked R&B (‘All About You feat. Saint Lane’) and swaggering reggae (‘With You – Bad Boys Remix’) melting into a cohesive 11-track opus.

Here, the musical makeovers given to some of the best tracks from the duo’s earlier releases Asleep in the Machine, Psychotica, and Collaborations of Very Isolated Delinquents “19 sound so fresh, less adept fans would be forgiven for mistaking them for brand new songs.

However, it’s one of the real newly-minted offerings, the Mac Miller-esque ‘Therapy’, that forms one of the album’s most triumphant moments. Its loungey, chill-funkedelia is crying out for the summer festival stage, while extra vocal lashings from Citizen Kay and MAXINE make frontman Carlos Lara’s lush, soulful melodies even more irresistible.

The disc also boasts one of the most attention-grabbing album intros in recent memory, adding DJ Albo himself, Federal opposition leader Anthony Albanese, to its long list of features, as he delivers a rousing speech about the importance of supporting Aussie music (preach!)
