PREMIERE: WA Indie Experimentalist Romeo Walker Shares ‘Transformer’

Romeo Walker is the latest project from Perth songwriter Benjamin Witt, known for his work with The Chemist and as a solo artist. Romeo Walker’s noisy new single, ‘Transformer’, is premiering on Music Feeds.

‘Transformer’ follows 2021’s ‘Mood’, which was Witt’s premiere outing as Romeo Walker. The two tracks will appear on Romeo Walker’s upcoming self-titled LP, which is expected in April.

As Romeo Walker, Witt draws on his affection for artists such as Tom Waits, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Mulatu Astatke and Deerhunter. In fact, on ‘Transformer’, he was inspired to merge Astatke’s Ethio-jazz sound with something a little more unhinged.

“I was going for a Nick Cave meets Mulatu Astatke vibe,” Witt said in a statement shared with Music Feeds. “The verses are portraits of panic and a loss of control, however, the refrain is about overcoming and breaking on through to the other side. It’s just a three minute espresso shot for the soul.”

Witt recorded ‘Transformer’ at Tone City Recording Studio with producer Sam Ford (Psychedelic Porn Crumpets, POND, Abbe May). Grievous Bodily Calm’s Alex Reid played drums and percussion.

“I tracked it in a suit because in my experience, it always sounds better when you wear a suit,” Witt said.

Listen to ‘Transformer’ below ahead of its official release on Thursday, 3rd February.
