Black Midi Cover Taylor Swift, King Crimson & Captain Beefheart On New EP

London prog rock/post-punk band black midi have followed their 2021 album, Cavalcade, with the covers EP, Cavalcovers.

The three-song EP is out now and includes covers of two obvious black midi influences – King Crimson and Captain Beefheart – and one not-so-obvious: Taylor Swift. The covers were previously released on limited edition vinyl, but they’re now available for all to hear.

The London band – made up of vocalists and multi-instrumentalists Geordie Greep, Cameron Picton and Morgan Simpson – are known for including covers in their live set lists. In fact, in early February black midi played a show at South London venue The Windmill composed entirely of cover songs.

On that occasion, they played Bruce Springsteen’s ‘Born to Run’, ABBA’s ‘Dancing Queen’, CeeLo Green’s ‘Fuck You’, Ricky Martin’s ‘Livin La Vida Loca’, Cher’s ‘Believe’, George Michael’s ‘Careless Whisper’, Beastie Boys’ ‘Sabotage’ and several others.

On Cavalcover, black midi take on King Crimson’s ‘21st Century Schizoid Man’, from the UK prog rock band’s debut album, In the Court of the Crimson King (1969); Captain Beefheart’s ‘Moonlight On Vermont’ from 1969’s Trout Mask Replica by Captain Beefheart and his Magic Band; and Taylor Swift’s ‘Love Story’ from 2008’s Fearless and last year’s Fearless (Taylor’s Version).

Cavalcade came out in May 2021. It was black midi’s second album, following Schlagenheim from 2019. Cavalcade was named the 23rd best album of 2021 by Pitchfork. Listen to Cavalcovers here.
