Kate Bush Shares Message On ‘Running Up That Hill’ Resurgence: “It’s All Really Exciting”

Kate Bush has shared a message on her website acknowledging the renewed interest in her 1985 song ‘Running Up That Hill’ following its prominent usage in the latest season of Stranger Things.

Since the first half of the Netflix series’ fourth season premiered late last month, Bush’s Hounds of Love standout has experienced a significant resurgence. That’s included a massive spike in streams – it’s currently the second-highest song on Spotify’s Australian songs chart, and number four on the global chart.

It’s also reached the Top 10 in multiple countries’ singles charts, including entering the UK chart at number eight. Here in Australia, it’s currently sitting at the number two position on the ARIA Singles Chart, just behind Harry Styles‘ Harry’s House hit ‘As It Was’.

“You might’ve heard that the first part of the fantastic, gripping new series of ‘Stranger Things’ has recently been released on Netflix. It features the song, ‘Running Up That Hill’ which is being given a whole new lease of life by the young fans who love the show – I love it too,” Bush wrote on her website in a rare personal message.

“Because of this, Running Up That Hill is charting around the world and has entered the UK chart at No. 8. It’s all really exciting! Thanks very much to everyone who has supported the song. I wait with bated breath for the rest of the series in July.”

Last week, it was revealed that Bush gave permission for the song to be used in Stranger Things as she is a fan of the series. Sony’s Wende Crowley, who received the publishing request, told Variety that Bush is “selective when it comes to licensing her music.” As such, the script pages and footage were delivered to Bush so she could see exactly how the song would be utilised, with the singer then giving her blessings.
