Come round all ye fans of Roald Dahl and Britpop alike because Jarvis Cocker, former frontman of Pulp, will be starring in the latest of Dahl’s tales to be taken to the silver screen.
The yet to be released stop motion adaptation of Fantastic Mr Fox will see the bespectacled singer playing Petey, a mandolin carrying child who strongly resembles Cocker.
However despite the physical resemblance it would seem that Jarvis’s voice carried too heavy the tones of ol’ Blighty as after an initial screening of the film to American test audiences, it turned out no one had a fucking clue what the lanky git was on about.
“I did a narration bit at the start of Mr Fox,” the singer told the Times, “but they showed that to test audiences in the US and they were very bamboozled. So I’ve ended up on the cutting-room floor. I tried to enunciate clearly!”
While appearing in a children’s film may not seem very rock n roll, Jarvis assures us he has his own twisted reasons for doing so.
“If you criticise Disney, the next step is ‘do better,'” he told Time Out. “I get the chance to do it myself and corrupt young minds.”
The cast of Fantastic Mr Fox includes George Clooney, Meryl Streep and Bill Murray. It opens in UK theatres on 23 October.
